iStock_000011166455XSmallWhen the Exxon Valdez oil spill happened I was ten years old. A direct consequence of living on the Pacific Coast back in 1989 was that we heard about it on TV,  in the newspapers,  and we studied it endlessly in school. You felt like, at least 10 people were doing their best to target blame and clean it up.

Approximately 250,000 barrels of crude oil were dumped into Prince William Sound’s Blight Reef and at the time it was considered the worse environmental disaster in history. It has taken years to clean up, and as of a few yers ago, it is estimated that 26,000 gallons of oil still remain embedded in the sandy shoreline. Most recently a study by the University of North Carolina believes it may take upwards of another 30 years for the arctic habitants of the regions shoreline to actually recover.

iStock_000005290016XSmallSo I saw a sign at nursery recently that said “Ladybugs on Sale Here!” and as I am a sucker for signage, it made me wonder, if I really did need to add ladybugs to my garden environment.

Ok, I’m not really a sucker for signage; I just like to know things before I go to a nursery so either A- I don’t have to ask questions beyond where something is located, or B- I want to come across smarter than the average grower. So naturally I needed to know, if ladybugs are something I needed, and if I do... then I want them!

It’s after May 24th so naturally I assume everyone has started their summer planting. Here are a few quick tricks for making a the most out of this years vegetable garden

  • Did you know Starbucks offers free coffee grinds for your garden? Customers can ask for complimentary five-pound (2.27-kilogram) bags of used coffee grounds to enrich garden soil. Not only are the coffee grinds great for composting because they provide a good level of acidity to your soil but it also adds a great texture to your compost. And when you mix it directly into your summer garden the worms will love to feed on it.
