From the Editor

Beware the ides of March a soothsayer called out to Julius Caesar as he made his way through the crowds. And while he would indeed be assassinated on March 15th, I still think that March is a pretty good month.

In the States they are celebrating Women’s History Month and I found an interesting article by Jone Johnson Lewis explaining how it all came about. Canada’s Women’s History month is October to bring recognition to the Persons Case of October 1929.

March 8th is International Women’s Day. This year to broaden the spirit of women supporting women why not open yourself up to having coffee with a woman who has perhaps been on the outskirts of your life. The neighbour you have been on nodding acquaintance with, that quiet entrepreneur at your networking group or a business colleague who you would like to get to know a little better. Don’t be afraid to cross the generational or cultural divide. Because "Every woman has a story."

March is also DVT Month (Deep Vein Thrombosis). I know that every month seems to have a disease attached to it but stay with me for this one.

David Bloom was the NBC journalist who died in 2003 at the age of 39. Bloom was traveling with the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq when he suddenly died due to deep vein thrombosis and a pulmonary embolism. He had a wife, Melanie, and three daughters: Nicole, Christine, and Ava. Melanie Bloom now works with the Coalition to Prevent DVT.

DVT hit close to home for me when my colleague and friend, Terri Pepin a fit and healthy 39 year old was struck by DVT; today she is back to being an entrepreneur, wife and mother but for awhile there we all held our breath. To read more about Terri's story here is Staying the Course.

The disturbing common denominator about DVT? Is how it can strike healthy, active people with no warning.

Not only is March my birthday month it also brings with it the first day of spring. While here in Alberta we are still turning on the furnace in the morning to ward off the night’s cold temperatures the days are gradually becoming warmer and sunnier.

I think that I will buy myself some daffodils this week.
