Summer school use to mean trying to absorb the mystery that is calculus in a hot and stuffy classroom while your friends where outside playing and eating ice cream. Now our summers can be about learning how to prepare the perfect soufflé or studying the neo-classical art movement because there is a world of courses, retreats and workshops to discover and sign-up for.
What do Kingsley Amis, T S Eliot, Indira Gandhi, Dr Susan Rice, Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan, Gertrude Bell, Sir Walter Raleigh, James Smithson have in common? They are all part of the rich mosaic of Oxford University's history. Today Oxford is one of a number of international universities that offer adult courses over the summer months. If you can't resist taking courses with intriguing names such as Twilight of the Romanovs or Clash of the Gods: Art in Paganism, Christianity and Islam check out Oxford University Summer School for Adults.
If you prefer something a little more hedonistic why not go the Pinot Grigio & Provolone route. This Sunday Times page has a great list of summer cooking schools in Italy and while it is from 2004, I checked the websites mentioned and they are all still available.
Imagine putting pen to paper or fingers to keypad with no family demands and distractions. Take a writers workshop or retreat in Greece, New Mexico or Ireland. Or have you always wanted to find your inner sculptress........why not consider an art holiday?
Ok, so if all you want to do on your summer vacation is just vacation there is no better travel website to share with you than Journeywoman.com
