What are they like? They’re designed to be thin, light and powerful, running low consumption versions of Intel’s high end processors. They have solid state flash drives which let them turn on faster and are supposed to have a battery life of 5-8 hours. The trade off is that they’re far more expensive than a standard laptop, coming in a little below $1000 to start, and lack an optical drive (no DVD, CD etc). This is the first generation of a new style of technology, so have all the bugs been worked out? There’s no way to say for sure, but at least they’re based off technology that’s in use in other applications. What are Ultrabooks? When people wanted laptops to be even more convenient (smaller, lighter, cheaper) the Netbook was invented. But there were compromises, primarily in power. While they were fine for surfing the internet (hence “Net”book), they struggled to do much else. Much of the functionality of these products was transferred to the various Pads now available as well. Now, however, in steps the Ultrabook. Apple started the trend with the MacBook Air so now Intel has stepped in by encouraging their producers to design similar products and refer to them as Ultrabooks.
