Balancing the Book PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jennifer Chandler

I managed to read an entire book in two months. Yes, I know some of you out there may be questioning why it would take so long... "What's up with her, I can get through a book a week." I have trouble balancing my time well enough to accommodate good book reading, I am imbalanced.

Some women I know like to read before they go to sleep, not this girl, no way. That would be the recipe for eyes wide open or a whole bunch of weird dreams. Stopping in the middle of the day is also out of the question, I forget to eat some days let alone take time out for a page turning session. Maybe I could get books on tape for when I'm driving because currently that pesky law referring to care and attention on the road is getting in the way of me holding a book. Cell phone, texting, eating and applying makeup from what I have observed is exempt.

Jennifer Chander's Balancing the BookThe book I chose to read was What We Know So Far: Wisdom Among Women by Beth Benatovich; it turned out to be a good choice. I actually took short bits of time to immerse myself in the collection of interviews with twenty-five "middle aged" women. Then, I had a week off mid – September and I read a section every day, what a concept? These women were cool with the honesty and they provided great insight into their life, how they dealt with change, what aging is in the eyes of women and society. Interestingly enough, what I learned was we are more in control of our aging than we think. A healthy outlook goes a long way towards feeling that the best time is in your prime.

Now, I'm on the next book which heads in the opposite end of the age spectrum. A woman by the name of Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D peaked my interest with her book Generation Me. I had high hopes of reading both these books over the summer but I aimed too high. I'm going to be more realistic with this one and say... four months for completion. Whew! Always good to make realistic goals.
