Jill Crossland's Daily Notes

An article entitled Maine restaurant leaves diners in a state of Grace caught my eye. Apparently a couple turned a 1856 former United Methodist church into a high end restaurant. So if you are travelling through Portland Maine this summer it might be well worth checking out Grace.

MAY, 2012

moon_home_pageIf editorials had titles this one would be May, Moons & Moms. At the beginning of this month the world witnessed Mother Nature providing us with a super moon.  A Google search unravels an international array of stunning photographs.  The Chinese called it the dragon moon; the Choctaws panther moon; Cherokee planting moon.

It is important we don’t lose our reverence for nature and equally importantly our connection to it.  As women the changing seasons, tides and moons don’t affect or alter our lives as they did generations ago. Any opportunity to be part of the more natural course of the universe inevitably recharges and ground us.

And then there are our mothers. Women of all shapes and sizes; who love and annoy, support and push, nurture and discipline. While I am tall and somewhat blonde, my own mother was a petite, very attractive brunette. She was more into teaching me about the world, etiquette, clothes and the right accessories than how to prepare a meal and keep house. She was a good cook; it just didn’t interest her all that much as it doesn’t me today.  Her passions included travel, reading and all manner of music.

Joan Crossland (née Wilson) had no tolerance for foolishness, fluffy women or idle chit chat preferring both people and conversation of substance.  September 1939 when England entered the Second World War she immediately joined the WRENS and told her family after the fact. A stylish smoker (it was a different time) with her cigarette case and elegant lighter she would succumb to lung cancer in 1975.

If you are spending time with your mother The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the perfect mom/daughter movie. As I can’t have a glass of wine with my mother I hope afterwards you enjoy one with yours.
